His father, David Gonzalez Sr., was a first baseman for the Mexican National Team (this is why they moved to Tijuana).


His brother Edgar was drafted in 2000 by Tampa Bay Devil Rays (886th overall). Played his career in the minor leagues.

2003 - Traded from the Marlins (with Ryan Snare and Will Smith) to the Texas Rangers for Ugueth Urbina.

2006 - Traded from the Texas Rangers (with Chris Young and Terrmel Sledge) to the San Diego Padres for Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka.

2009 - Played winter ball in the Mexican Pacific League with the Venados de Mazatlán.

2010 - Traded (after the season) from the Padres to the Boston Red Sox for Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo, and Reymond Fuentes.

2012 - Traded from the Red Sox (with Josh Beckett, Nick Punto, Carl Crawford and $11 million in cash) to the Los Angeles Dodgers for James Loney, Iván DeJesús, Jr., and Allen Webster.

2017 - He was put on the disabled list for the first time in his career. 

​

2017 - Lost the World Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Houston Astros.

​

2017 - Traded (after the season) from Dodgers (with Charlie Culberson, Scott Kazmir, Brandon McCarthy, and cash considerations) to the Atlanta Braves for Matt Kemp. He was immediately put on waivers.

​

2018 - Signed a 1-year contract with the New York Mets.
