His parents met at Oswego High School.


Howie, father, was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1974.
His father was an assistant baseball coach at Georgia (coach Steve Webber) and became the head baseball coach at Marshall.

His mother worked at Athens Regional Hospital.

​

His brother, Brad, played baseball at Clemson and was drafted in 2004 by the Florida Marlins but never made it to the bigs.

​

He and his wife married in December 2007. They met at Duluth High School. Ashley graduated from Auburn University.

McCann was the personal catcher for John Smoltz for most of the 2005

2002 - Drafted by the Atlanta Braves (2nd round).

 

2005 - June 10th - Major League debut with the Atlanta Braves.


2009 - McCann committed more errors at catcher than any other major leaguer (12) and the lowest fielding percentage (.988).

 

2011 - He allowed more stolen bases than any other catcher (104).

 

2013 - Signed a 5-year contract with the New York Yankees ($85 million)

 

2016 - Gary Sanchez was brought up to share catching duties with McCann but ended up taking his job.

 

2016 - Traded from the Yankees to the Houston Astros for Albert Abreu and Jorge Guzmán.

 

2017 - World Series winner versus the Los Angeles Dodgers (with Houston).

2008 - He released a charity wine (The McCann Merlot). 

​

2011 - He hit a line drive foul ball which struck manager Luis Salazar and caused him to become blind in the left eye.

​

2013 - Carlos Gomez, hit a homerun and McCann believed he was admiring it too long and rounding the bases too slowly so he blocked the plate, resulting in a brawl. After the incident fans edited McCann's wikipedia page to say that he was angry with his wife during their wedding for walking down the aisle too slowly.

​

His brother Brad had a cameo in a Billy Crystal and Bette Midler comedy called, “Parental Guidance".
