2018 - April 11th - He hit Tyler Austin with a pitch after Austin slide into Brock Holt at 2nd base. Austin charged and a bench-clearing brawl ensued. He was ejected, suspended for 6 games, and fined an undisclosed amount.

In 2005, after signing a letter of intent with UCR (college), Kelly stated he was related to "Machine Gun" Kelly (a prohibition-era gangster). When he reached the professional level he was asked about it and admitted that it was a joke.
