2007 - drafted by the Chicago Cubs as a catcher in the first round (48th overall)
2008 - Traded, with Matt Murton, Eric Patterson and Sean Gallagher, to the Oakland Athletics for Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin.
2010 - April 30, Major League debut for the Oakland Athletics.
2012 - During his option year with the Athletic's Donaldson played winter ball in the Dominican Republic under manager Ken Oberkfell (team Leones del Escogido).
2014 - traded Donaldson to the Toronto Blue Jays for Brett Lawrie, Kendall Graveman, Sean Nolin, and Franklin Barreto
2015 - Won the AL MVP award.

As a child he was Braves fan and his favorite player was Ron Gant.
Lifelong avid golfer. He appeared on a local TV station showing off a "picture perfect" golf swing at 18 months old.

2016 - He made a guest appearance on the show “Vikings” which he is a fan of.
In an interview he credited Greg Sparks (Sparky), a hitting coach of Oakland's Triple-A Sacramento River Cats affiliate, with teaching him a lot and getting him to the next level.
In 2017 he was living in the Tip Top Lofts on Lake Shore West in Toronto during the season. His condo overlooks the water and he owns (or owned) a Porsche 911 that he would drive to the Rogers Centre in.
He owns a place in Tampa, Florida.
He has a yellow-brick house in his hometown of Mobile, Alabama. His mother, Lisa, lives a few minutes away.
