His mother Diana was his first Little League coach. She also taught him to bowl at an early age.
Terry Shumpert played parts of 14 seasons with several MLB teams. In 2004 Shumpert spent his final season of professional baseball with the Triple A Nashville Sounds and worked extensively with Betts.

His family lived in Murfreesboro, Tennessee until he was 10 years old. At this time he moved to Brentwood, Tennesse.

Mookie’s friends used to call his dad, “Papa Willie”. His father was a CSX railroad mechanical superintendent and used to blow a toy train whistle after big plays during high school games (air force vet).

He met his wife in middle school.
