In high school Turner faced the late pitcher Jose Fernandez (Tampa-Alonso High School) in the state baseball semifinals. During the game Turner fouled off a pitch of Fernandez which broke his metal bat.
At 15 years old he was cut from the PAL Travel team in Palm Beach County, Florida.
