Played as a catcher for the Industriales in Cuba's Serie Nacional. He was given permission to leave Cuba (1997) and moved to Miami. His father used to catch Odrisamer Despaigne's father when they played in the Cuban League.


In 2011 Luis was a warehouse manager for the Sherwin-Williams paint company.

His mother in an accountant.

Yonder's sister Yainee is married to Manny Machado.  Used to be a member of the Miami Marlins' Mermaids (and Miami Hurricanes) cheerleading squad.

2011 - Traded with Edinson Volquez, Yasmani Grandal, and Brad Boxberger to the San Diego Padres for Mat Latos

2015 - Traded with Marc Rzepczynski to the Oakland Athletics for Drew Pomeranz and José Torres

​

2017 - The Athletics traded him to Seattle for Boog Powell.

​

2017 - He signed a 2-year contract with Cleveland ($16 million)

​

2018 - Inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame (April)
